Gloucester Amateur Radio and Electronics Society

Websites

Cliff P gave us an introductory talk on the way in which web sites are set up and operated. The need for a permanent connection to the Internet, with avoidance of bottlenecks caused by data handling rate limitations, point to the use of a host computer provided by a commercial operating company.

Web server software and an identifier are established during set up. Content of the site can be handled by various means, such as Word files and executable programs from a directory/folder, or written using a generic standard called HTML.

Several levels are available in HTML, but there are points in favour of compiling at the simpler levels. Cliff emphasised that it was necessary to check and test pages before using file transfer protocol to send actual web pages to the host.

Cliff’s talk provided us with an easily understood introduction as to how an efficient web site is created.
