Gloucester Amateur Radio and Electronics Society

What we do:

The club has a wide variety of activities including:

Meetings

We meet every Monday evening, except for Bank Holidays and the holiday month of August, at Churchdown School in Gloucester. On Bank Holiday Monday's and Wednesday evenings, we meet on the air.
We tend to have a formal meeting, such as a lecture or DF Hunt, on the first Monday of each month and informal meetings on the other Mondays.

Not all of our lectures are about electronics or radio. We sometimes have talks about other interesting subjects as well.

Our informal meetings give members a chance to get on the air, do some construction work, just have a good old chin-wag with some old friends, or make some new friends.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are normally available (for a very small charge) at our meetings

Why not join us? Come along and we will make you very welcome. Click here for the location.

Construction

We have a thriving group of constructors who are always happy to help those who are new to constructing electronic equipment.

Our constructors have tackled a wide range of projects, right up to designing and biulding their own transceivers (transmitter/receivers) and aerials.

Not all of our constructors are interested in radio. Other projects have included high fidelity audio systems and even guitar amplifiers

Of course, our constructors also tackle simpler jobs.

The club supports the constructors by offering prizes in our own constructors competition for members.

Education

We are very keen to encourage the educational value of our hobby on both the Amateur Radio and the Electronics fronts. For example, our constructors and construction contests aim to broaden knowledge and understanding of both analogue and digital electronics. There is plenty of expert help on hand too - a number of our members are or were employed in the electronics industry and have a very wide range of skills, which they are keen to pass on to the newer members of the club.

We can also offer the courses, which prospective Amateur Radio licence holders need to attend as a step in attaining their licences. Click here for more details about Amateur Radio training and about the licencing process

In addition, we have a number of receivers and transmitters that members can use at our meetings. (Use of the transmitters is subject to Oftel regulations).

DF Hunts

Direction Finding (DF) Hunts, which are also sometimes known as "Fox Hunts", are where club members use their radio operating skills to find a transmitting station. A prize is awarded to the person who does best in this activity over the year.

Only a receiver is needed to take part in these hunts (although frequencies do vary). Often, there will be receivers for loan whenever a DF Hunt takes place.

Tony has written a piece about our Direction Finding contests - both current and in the past.

On-the-air

In addition to club members going on the air at our informal Monday meetings and on bank-holiday Mondays', we also have on-the-air meetings (or "nets").

The Bank Holiday on-the-air sessions do NOT take place at the school but at an elevated site which is agreed in advance.

Our Nets take place every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm (19.30 hours) local time. We call on 145.500MHz and then move to a free channel (normally 145.550MHz).

Visits

We also try to get out and visit places of radio and electronic interest whenever we can.
